Self-esteem is an individual’s
overall emotional evaluation of their worth. Low self-esteem is associated with
negative feelings such as sadness, depression, anxiety, etc. Students with low
self-esteem may have troubles in gaining confidence and thus, affecting their
performance in school. In this study we found out that the students of
Philippine Nikkei Jin Kai International School encounter this kind of problem.
The purpose of this study is for
us to find out the reasons onto why the students have low self-esteem and how
this can affect their academic performance. This study is important since low
self-esteem plays a huge role in a student’s life especially their relationship
towards other people and mental health. It aims to help them overcome their
struggle dealing with low self-esteem, change their perspective, and rebuild
their confidence.
Based from the problems, we made
some assumptions. First, is that low self-esteem affects the social
relationship of the students. Second, some students are not capable and worthy
of what they are doing which affects their academic performances.
After conducting a survey from a
total of 50 selected students in the school, this is the result.
The data of the survey result shows
that the students of PNJK-IS have low self-esteem. Most of them experience
stress and anxiety due to unending school works. They fear socializing towards
other people including friends and classmates since many of them have
experienced being bullied. Therefore, their lack of confidence to
actively participate in class during discussions and activities greatly affects
their performance in class and thus, resulting their grades to drop.
In order to overcome having low self-esteem
first of all, the students need to learn how to relax since stress plays a huge
role in self-esteem. They should also set goals and think about what they would
like to achieve. Practicing how to be confident is also the key. Lastly,
students should take care and accept themselves, everything takes time and the
only person who can help you is yourself.
